Fredrik Ullman worked as a scientific collaborator at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich). He belonged to the research group of Prof. Dr. Roman Boutellier, who chairs the fields of Technology and Innovation Management at the Department «Management, Technology, and Economics» (D-MTEC).

Born on April 8th, 1980 in Gothenburg, Sweden, Fredrik Ullman grew up for the first part in his town of birth and then in Geneva, he has been living in Dully, Switzerland since 1988. After having graduated from high school in the French part of Switzerland, he started his studies at ETH in Zurich, in 1999. In 2005 he obtained his Diplomingenieur (MSc) degree in Industrial Management and Manufacturing at ETH in Zurich with majors in Logistics, Information Management and Integrated Product Development. As undergraduate he studied mechanical and process engineering at ETH in Zurich.

His studies included a four months academic project achieved at KTH in Stockholm, Sweden, in collaboration with ASSA ABLOY, were he gained experience in the field of Portfolio Management in R&D.
He gained practical experience during an internship at Roxane Laboratories (Boehringer Ingelheim USA) in Columbus Ohio, where he was given the task to suggest a new production strategy for the market launch of generic drugs, focusing on supply chain risk management.
Upon completion of his internship he was assigned a final diploma thesis on “project prioritization in development, for the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients” for the development department at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc. in Ridgefield, CT, USA.

Research Interest

The emphasis of his research is productivity in pharmaceutical drug discovery. The focus is:
- early indicators of productivity in pharmaceutical discovery
- strategies for outsourcing and off-shoring drug discovery to China, India and Eastern Europe
- speed of organizational knowledge creation and creativity in science driven companies

For the first two focuses, projects have been performed at global pharmaceutical companies. For the last point over 40 service providing companies (CROs) have been visited in China and India so far.
